Two years have passed since Jacqui Banks’ family relocated from Chicago, where she attended a school with over 1,000 students. Today, she feels as though she’s always been a part of Walker.
“I knew I wanted to play on the softball team so getting to campus and to the summer softball practices was important. Right away, that gave me a group of friends. And then, on the day of our orientation, five of those friends showed up to make sure that I was getting to know Walker. They are still my closest friends.”
Jacqui hopes to study Psychology as her first step in becoming a Clinical Child Psychologist. She has a heart for kids which is evident in all that she’s gotten involved with at Walker.
Aside from playing softball, Jacqui works as an Extended Day Program employee, helping students in the Lower School with their homework and after school activities. Last summer, she also worked with our Primary School Summer program as a Day Camp Counselor. “Oh!” she adds excitedly, “and my WISE internship” where she got the chance to work in a local counseling office.
Feeling known by her teachers and college guidance advisors is critical to Jacqui. Having come from such a large school, she recognizes the value in the close relationships that are the result of Walker's intimate environment. “It’s hard to get lost here,” she says. What’s even more important than not getting lost? Jacqui says it’s actually finding out where you belong. “It’s so easy to make this place your home. Everyone is just eager to know you. To care. There are so many people and ways to connect.”
Jacqui is excited for her future and for the chance to give back some of what she has gained in her short time at Walker. To serve others and help children in need is important to her. And, like many of our students, Jacqui will miss the relationships she’s developed. Still as she spreads her wings, she knows that Walker will always be a place she belongs.
