July 13-17 - DRUMMING FUNDAMENTALS, 1 P.M. - 4 P.M. (Grades 7-12)

Geared towards MS and US students that are involved in band, but not limited to those students, this camp is meant to go through fundamentals of drumming, covering technical fundamentals as well as exercises to reinforce and develop those technical fundamentals. These ideas include, but are not limited to, proper body posture, how to hold the sticks/mallets correctly, various types of strokes and rudiments, and exercises designed to reinforce and develop these technical fundamentals and skills.

We'll be learning and practicing several exercises, so the ability to read music, specifically rhythms, is going to be important. Also students should bring their own sticks. I recommend either a full-size concert snare drum stick (Vic Firth SD1, Innovative Percussion IP-LD) or a smaller marching stick (like a Ralph Hardimon Indoor), but any sticks "larger" than 7A will be adequate.

New and returning Walker students who are joining our amazing Middle School for 6th grade are encouraged to attend the 6th Grade Experience. Returning to campus before the hustle and bustle of the first day of school allows students to begin to get to know each other, as well as the systems in place here at Walker, helping to make the transition to middle school a smooth one.

This camp will focus on building the executive function skills needed for success in middle school. Emphasis will be placed on utilizing Walker Web, learning how to communicate with instructors, determining how to manage time, and developing organizational methods. Students will also practice navigating through mock schedules so that they will feel comfortable transitioning from class to class. The 6th Grade Experience is a great way for students to build up tools for success all while having fun!

July 20-24 - Crazy for Cards, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. (Grades 6-8)

Crazy for Cards is a week-long, half-day camp during which the kids will learn how to play several classic card games - Hearts, Rummy, Poker, etc. - as well as some that they may have never heard of before. No experience necessary! Of course, we'll learn the rules and such for each game, but we'll also talk about how and why these games work the way they do. By the end of the week, campers will know enough about these games to share them with their friends and family AND to be able to beat them, too (at least at first)! The goal is for the kids to gain a new level of understanding and appreciation for the games they already know, and to generate new excitement for the games they're playing for the first time!

UPPER SCHOOL SUMMER PROGRAMS
July 6-10 - The spoken word with mustafa, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (Grades 7-12)

Students will watch clips of famous spoken-word poets, get inspired to write, and eventually perform their own pieces for Walker parents and visitors. Spoken Word is a form of storytelling that allows students to perform using theater techniques, music, and even dance. Spoken Word poems are often about personal identity, issues taking place in our society/world- but they don't always have to be deep! This is an opportunity for students to expand on their love of poetry or to look at poetry in a new light.
