Last weekend, 22 members of the Walker Thespian Troupe 6768 traveled to New York City, where they attended shows and participated in Broadway master classes taught by professionals from Broadway Up Close, including stage management and stage combat. Students also learned the music and choreography to “Magic Foot,” a song from the musical 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The dance captain and understudy for the Off-Broadway show, Cecilia Snow, taught the master class. Students also were given a glimpse into what life is like for someone working in theatre in New York. Students also saw three Broadway shows – Ragtime, Chess and Operation Mincemeat. From the rehearsal room to the stage, this trip inspired Walker students to grow as artists, collaborators and storytellers and brought the classroom to life in the heart of NYC. Katie Arjona, Troupe Director and member of Walker’s Theatre & Dance Faculty, said “We have travelled every other year since 2015 (missing a few years due to the pandemic.) My goal for the trip is always to immerse students in a city where theatre is happening at the highest level. The students participate in master classes in both acting and technical theatre and visit the Drama Book Shop and other NYC sites. “We see different types of shows – musicals, plays, comedies, dramas, Broadway and Off-Broadway, so students can get exposure to different types of experiences as an audience member.” |
