FROM STUDENTS TO COLLEAGUES: SCOTTY (FLETCHER) BREWINGTON '94

What are some of your favorite memories from your time as a student here?

I have so many! Señor DeSantiago was one of my favorite teachers. Before tests, he would always say, "Take out your pencils, control your emotions, and ordain your destiny." I say that to my own sons now.

Were there any teachers or mentors who had a lasting impact on you?

Señor DeSantiago, of course. Also Ed Deavers (English/Drama). He gave us all such confidence. When he died several years ago, his funeral was packed with former students. His mom invited everyone back to his house after the service to take a memento. She said he thought of his students as family and wanted to leave his belongings to them. He cared about us so much. He even visited us at college after we graduated. Jean Strickland (History) is by far the best teacher I have ever had.

How has the school changed since you were a student? How has it stayed the same?

There are so many more opportunities now than when I was a student. There are more classes, more sports, musicals, and we have bands! Both of my sons are very involved in band and that has been an incredible part of their experience here. When I was a student, we had amazing theatrical performances, but no musicals. Now, my sons both play in the pit orchestra for the Upper School musicals. We have it all!

What’s one thing you wish today’s students knew about the school’s past?

Walker was a life-changing place for me 30 years ago, but it is even better now.

What do you enjoy most about teaching or working at the school now?

When you work here, you see how invested everyone is. Everyone works incredibly hard for this school and all of the students. There is a lot of heart behind the scenes.

Are there any traditions or events that are especially meaningful to you?

I love Homecoming and the College Parade. I have a senior now, so this year's parade is going to be especially awesome! Someone bring the Kleenex...

What makes this school community unique, in your opinion?

When new families visit Walker, they almost all comment about how nice everyone is. We have a friendly, welcoming, inclusive vibe here. I'm very proud of that.
