Abigail Lee Explores Passion for Writing at Governor’s Honors Program
Senior Abigail Lee was selected as a communicative arts major at the Georgia Governor’s
Honors Program (GHP) this summer at Georgia Southern University.
The four-week residential program for gifted high school students welcomes rising juniors and seniors to pursue their passions through various weeklong courses. In addition to English and writing classes, Lee also took courses in her declared GHP elective, which was math.
She explored courses ranging from analyzing the short stories of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges to film noir and episodic writing, where students collaborated in a writer’s room to develop an episode of a television series.
Her favorite class? Slam Poetry.
“I wrote a poem about my mom called ‘Dear Mama’ and performed it at the end-of-season
Coffee House celebration,” said Lee. “When you perform something that personal and are
vulnerable in front of 600 people – and they can relate to you and the work – it is truly one of the best experiences.”
For Lee, a highlight of the summer was meeting other students in the program.
“We went to jazz band performances and saw amazing plays from the theater students. The math students taught us card tricks, the engineering students built a plane, and there was a science fair where the STEM majors showcased their research,” said Lee. “It’s fun to meet so many people who are passionate about what they do. It’s a wonderful environment – kind of like a four-week long Spark Day.”
Lee, who has been at Walker since the seventh grade, plans to continue studying creative writing or “something English-related” in college, but wants to major in business. In addition to serving as the Student Service Organization (SSO) vice president and co-editor of Walker’s literary magazine, Lee also has a passion for economics. She is currently taking an independent study on financial market history with Mr. Arjona and will take Advanced Topics in Economics next semester.
