Senior Sophie Severino Chosen for Canadian U20 Lacrosse Training Team, Embodies Excellence On and Off the Field

Walker senior Sophie Severino has earned a coveted spot on the Canadian U20 Lacrosse Training Team. Sophie, a dual citizen with Canadian roots through her mother, has been selected for this prestigious team after an impressive performance during tryouts.

Sophie will train with the team in Baltimore, Md., this fall. She hopes to be selected for a spot on the roster to compete in the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong next summer.

Sophie’s journey into the world of lacrosse began in third grade, and from early on, she demonstrated an innate talent for the game. By fourth grade, she had already embraced the role of goalie, a position she has continued to hone. Her exceptional skills, coupled with her unwavering determination, earned her a spot on the Atlanta Storm club lacrosse team and The Walker School’s varsity lacrosse team.

“It means so much to me to represent a school that really values their students,” Sophie said.

At The Walker School, Sophie has excelled both as a player and as a role model for her peers.
Her commitment to her teammates and her dedication to fostering a sense of community in the athletic department is evident in her actions. Just last night, she and her fellow lacrosse team members attended the Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball matches to show their support, embodying the close-knit and supportive spirit that defines The Walker School’s athletics program.

“Walker fosters freedom and creativity to try new things. It was very appealing to me to see all the different things I could be involved in at my first club fair,” Sophie said. “Walker is so accommodating for students who want to try clubs and activities in different areas.”

In addition to her prowess on the lacrosse field, Sophie shines in other aspects of school life. She has been an active participant in The Walker School’s theater department, showcasing her versatility and commitment to both the arts and athletics. Sophie’s involvement extends beyond her artistic pursuits; she is an essential part of the LOVE Club, the Diversity Alliance Board, and last year, she established a chapter of “Morgan's Message” at Walker.

Morgan’s Message is a program that “strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics.” Sophie applied to be an educational ambassador for the program and took the initiative to launch a chapter at Walker.

“Mental Health is so stigmatized,” Sophie said. “I wanted to be able to create an open dialogue at Walker to show other athletes that they are not alone.”

Sophie has an excellent academic and athletic trajectory in place, as she has committed to play Division I Lacrosse at the University of Rhode Island next fall.
