Matt Bachmann ('05): Bouncing Back

Matt Bachman arrived on the Walker School campus in 7th grade.. As is the case for many new students to Walker, he recalls being impressed by the anomaly of lock-less and full-size lockers. Recognizing that the smaller environment and the intimate scale of Walker gave him a much-desired sense of community, Matt quickly thrived.

Before graduating from Walker in 2005, Matt was involved in peer leadership, worked on the school newspaper, and much to his own surprise, even performed in the school musical that year: Grease. Primarily, though, what he values most is that Walker taught him how to bounce back, how to try different things, and how to write, a lifelong skill that he will attribute forever to Walker’s English teachers.

In 2012, after receiving his BA from The University of Michigan and following a brief stint in the working world, Matt decided to enroll in Columbia University to earn his Masters of Business Administration. The entrepreneurial boom was well underway and his desire to understand how to build a business was coming into focus. Matt Bachmann walked into a grad school classroom carrying a travel mug of homemade cold brew coffee and met Ben Gordon, who was sitting with a leather-wrapped mason jar filled with his own homebrew. The duo became fast friends, deciding to enter into a school competition, winning that contest, and earning $7,000 to launch a coffee subscription business.

Today, Matt (and Ben) are the co-founders of Wandering Bear coffee found nationwide at retailers such as Kroger, Whole Foods, Amazon, FreshDirect, and Thrive Market, as well as on tap in thousands of offices across the country.
