First-graders enter our building with countless questions about the world around them. Curiosity is continuously and thoughtfully cultivated in our Lower School to ensure that our students leave fifth grade still wanting to know. The Lower School builds strong readers and writers through Orton-Gillingham instruction, and direct instruction using purposefully selected picture books or novels with students each week. The reading curriculum focuses on deepening comprehension, developing and expanding vocabulary, and integrating language skills using a mentor text. Additional curriculum focuses on fluency and writing skills. Lower School students learn to write cursive using Handwriting Without Tears.
With two dynamic and dedicated Lower School science teachers and lab spaces, experimentation and excitement becomes the norm. A ping pong ball, a hairdryer, and some scientific coaching allow for students to experience and discover Bernoulli’s Principle for themselves!
Our program not only focuses on building fundamental academic skills for success in school but on developing strong social skills. Students learn to work well with others so that they are able to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing world. Classroom morning meetings build a strong sense of community ensuring that students start each day with confidence and connection.
