Shout Out: 4th Grader Wins Big At Dance Competition

Walker 4th Grader, Brielle Johnson, competed on Nov. 6-7 with her dance team at the Tremaine Dance Convention held in Atlanta.

At the event, Brielle and her team won many accolades, including first place in “Church” and “We Ready,” two hip hop numbers, as well as first place in “Din da da,” which was her tap trio.
Brielle has been dancing for a total of seven years. She started when she was two and a half years old in a small class, and around the age of four, she transferred to her current studio. There, Brielle takes several dance classes, including ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and barre. She says that choosing a favorite is hard, but currently, she is really enjoying tap.

This is the third time that Brielle has competed in this particular convention. The first time she competed in 2019, she won first place for her lyrical solo. She was excited to be back competing this year.

“I like performing the dances and competing against the other teams,” Brielle said.

Brielle dances four to five hours a week, but both Brielle and her mom, Wytona, agree that school work comes first. Brielle is an Honor Roll Student. Wytona says it means a lot to watch her daughter have a passion.

“Brielle catches on and learns quickly. It’s a good feeling to see her succeed,” Wytona said; “It’s amazing to see her remember all those dances.”

Brielle started at Walker in 2018. She says her favorite thing about Walker is the fun teachers and her friends. She likes that there is a different mixture of people from other cultures and heritages. Wytona likes that the classes are small so that teachers can get to know each student individually.

Up next for Brielle is Nationals! Because of her first place wins at this convention, Brielle and her dance team are heading to Orlando in July to compete for the national titles. This will be her first time competing at Nationals, and she is really looking forward to it.
Next year Brielle will launch her book club, “The Dancing Bookworms,” which combines her love for reading and her love of dance. This book club will feature books with dance themes, story time and, of course, dancing.
