Willard Scissum ('19): Set Up for His Future

Recruited to play for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, it’s odd to hear Willard Scissum say, “I didn’t grow up playing football. I was a swimmer, I played tennis and soccer. I was in gymnastics. But I didn’t play football until I came to Walker.”

Willard grew up in a family where education was important and hard work was the philosophy, so he  knew that coming to Walker was the right move for him. When he arrived on campus in seventh grade, he immediately invested himself in athletics and remained a critical part of Walker’s lacrosse, wrestling and football teams while maintaining an “A” average. “Even in Calculus,” Will adds with pride.

Applying to Tech was an easy decision for Willard, who wants to study Civil Engineering. “My parents have always instilled in me a drive to give 100% to whatever I do. Walker School has sharpened my skills, reinforced that drive and taught me so much about time management. I feel 100% prepared for Tech.”

It’s too hard for Willard to pick a favorite teacher or coach: “There are too many!”

Instead, he adds how important it was for him to have personal and close relationships with many of his teachers. “Knowing that they truly care about my learning and that I can connect with them is what meant so much,” Willardl says.

Willard recently found out he made the Dean’s list at Tech, even with Calculus on his schedule.

“There’s so much that Walker can give students. It’s a place that you can feel you are welcome, where you can have success academically and athletically and opportunities that set you up for the future,” he says.

We look forward to cheering you along in that future, Willard.
