Andrew Haynes: Inspiring Faculty Lead the Way
“We first heard about Walker from a friend when Andrew was 4 years old, and we joined the Walker community when Andrew was in Kindergarten. We chose Walker for its strong academics and nurturing environment,” states Debra Haynes.
Andrew has remained a part of The Walker School community and will graduate - with many friends he has known since that first day in our Primary School - this May. And though he is known and comfortable on campus, he isn’t used to having the attention he is now receiving as a Senior Spotlight candidate, nominated by his peers.
It took Andrew until 6th grade to really find his passion. “In sixth grade we had to do these rotations through the arts. We had to spend a little bit of time in drama, chorus, art and band. When I finally got to the band rotation,I discovered percussion instruments, and I've enjoyed it ever since! Mr. Motter and Mr. Kofoed were a large part of that."”
Though he has spent a good bit of his time in the band room, Andrew has managed to take advantage of many other opportunities available at Walker. “I’ve participated in Mock Trial, served on the Honor Council, been a peer leader. Oh. And I’m an Eagle Scout,” he adds as if it is a small accomplishment. “Still, getting to be part of the Walker drumline and serving as the percussion leader for our pep band” is the highlight of Andrew’s time at Walker. “I think Mr. (Rob) Holman has a lot to do with my love for the drums,“ he adds. To be able to see one of his teachers pursue his own personal passions outside of the classroom was inspiring to Andrew. And, has helped him see that he can continue to explore many different interests.
“Walker has been a fantastic school for both of our children,” Deb shares. Andrew’s younger sister, Lauren, is a current sophomore. “They each have been able to embrace various opportunities in academics, arts, athletics, and other activities to develop on their own individual paths. The caring faculty and staff truly know the students and are able to help each individual student develop into their best selves.”
Aside from Mr. Holman, Andrew credits Head of Upper School and Econ teacher Michael Arjona for helping him see an Econ/Business degree in his future. His dream school? “The University of Pennsylvania,” he smiles shyly, “or maybe UGA.”
No matter where Andrew ends up, we hope he continues to explore all the options in his bright future.
