6 Walker School Seniors named National Merit Semifinalists

Congratulations to Karoline Carruth, Andrew Haynes, Erika Kaczynski, Shanzeh Sheikh, Kalieann Wetherington and Rilee White for being named National Merit Semifinalists.
The Walker School is proud to announce that six seniors were named National Merit Semifinalists this year.

Karoline Carruth, Andrew Haynes, Erika Kaczynski, Shanzeh Sheikh, Kalieann Wetherington and Rilee White were among 16,000 scholars nationwide, who were selected based on their PSAT scores to compete for the National Merit Finalist status.

The students are involved in more than academics, with many competing in Varsity sports, the highest levels of band, community service, scientific research and internships with the Centers for Disease Control and much more.

Haynes said the Walker culture encourages students to participate in more than academics: “It’s obviously academically rigorous, but you’re expected to play sports, and be in clubs.”

Wetherington added: “Growing up at Walker teaches you how to manage your time better, so it’s why we’re able to take really hard classes and study a lot but also participate in so many different activities.”

National Merit Scholars will be named next spring. The winners share more than more than $31 million in scholarship money, something the Walker students are more excited about than the honor of being named a semifinalist.

“It’s nice we’re in the running for a lot of money,” White said.
