Meet Our Faculty

2018-19 New Faculty

Since January, division heads and department chairs have been working hard to identify talented teachers who will bring their expertise to Walker. We look forward to welcoming these educators to campus in August; we grow stronger as a community with each exceptional addition to our staff!

  • Upper School

    Elizabeth Blalock will join the Upper School math department. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Florida A&M University and is currently working on her Masters of Arts in Teaching, specializing in Math Education. After working in industry as a engineer and project manager, Elizabeth started her own tutoring company and most recently has served as the lead Math and Science teacher at Atlanta Country Day School. She brings an infectious enthusiasm for math, and her industry experience provides a focus on the application of mathematical concepts.
  • Middle School

    Katie Kelemen is coming to our Middle School science team. She is a proud graduate of Sewanee: The University of the South and comes to us from Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners, where she worked as a teaching fellow in their science department. Katie has a passion for hands-on teaching and enjoys bringing complex scientific concepts to life for her students through engaging activities.
  • Lower School

    Lynda Eckstrom joins the Lower School faculty as a lead third grade teacher, but she is not new to the Walker community. Not only has she worked as a substitute teacher in both the Primary and Lower Schools, but Lynda is also a Walker parent to Alexander (attended through MS), Ian (‘19), and Riley (‘22). Lynda has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Michigan University and a Masters of Arts degree in K-12 Educational Administration from Michigan State University. Lynda is a warm, nurturing person who has a great rapport with her students. Her experiences in both public and private school settings provide her with skills that will enable her to support students, parents, and her peers alike.

    Kareena Dunlap is our new Primary and Lower School Extended Day Program (EDP) Director. Kareena has an Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Leadership and Management. She has worked for many years as a preschool director and most recently as the program director at the Rainbow Child Care Center in Woodstock. Kareena has a great love of children, and we are looking forward to her expertise as she joins our EDP team.
  • Primary School

    Andreia Wieczorek will be joining our Primary School as a teaching assistant. Andreia has worked as a substitute teacher in our Primary School over the past year. In addition, many of our parents and students know Andreia from her role in the Primary School Extended Day Program. Andreia is a Walker parent to Gabby (‘29) and Gustavo (‘23). We are excited to add a trilingual member to our team; in addition to English, Andreia speaks both Portuguese and Spanish. She earned a business degree from the Universidad de Caxias do Sul in Brazil.

    Avery Armstrong joins the Primary School as a teaching assistant. Avery has been working as our girl’s lacrosse assistant community coach and is excited about expanding her role into the classroom. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on nursing from Shorter University. Upon graduating, she realized her true passion was working with children. Avery’s experience with children spreads over many years including her work as a gymnastics coach for both special needs children and adults, and working with young children at her church. We are excited to have her share in our passion for educating our children.

    We also welcome Deven Greene as our part-time Primary School Counselor. She holds a Masters in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Emory University. Deven is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Georgia and has an abundance of experience working in schools and in private practice at FloorTime Atlanta. She has experience working with students of all ages and is excited to be focusing on preschool-aged children.  Deven has also served as a consultant for parents in her prior years.

    Liza Mulroy joins our team from the Lower School. Liza holds a Master of Arts in Reading Literacy and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Emory University. Liza has been a Walker parent for 14 years to Grace (‘18) and Ruth (‘20) and a teacher at Walker for 10 years with varied teaching experience in both the Primary and Lower School. Trained in Orton Gillingham, she played a major role in the advancements of the Lower School’s reading and writing curriculum. Liza is excited to be back in the Primary School.
  • Athletics

    Jeremy Gough comes to Walker from Kennesaw State University, where he has been the Director of Sport Performance since 2013. Jeremy also served as a Strength and Conditioning Sport Physiology Fellow for the US Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs. Coach Gough will work with all Upper School teams as the strength and conditioning coordinator and teach US fitness classes; he will also serve as the US Physical Education Chair.  

    Andrea and Jeff Barnett are also joining the Walker PE staff.  The Barnetts come to us from Episcopal Collegiate in Little Rock, Arkansas. Andrea has served as a Kindergarten Associate teacher and primary/lower school science teacher. She started the varsity girls soccer program at Episcopal and has led that program to tremendous success; in addition, she’s coached varsity boys and girls tennis, leading her teams to 13 state titles.  Jeff has served as Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at Episcopal, where he started the strength and conditioning program. He has coached football, wrestling, and baseball during his time in Little Rock.
  • Administration

    Joanne Walsh, third grade teaching assistant in the Lower School, is moving out of the classroom and into our Admission Office as Admissions Associate. Joanne is looking forward to this opportunity to share her love of Walker with the greater community.

    As previously announced, we are happy to welcome Emily Tyson as Head of the Primary SchoolIra Dawson as our Head of the Middle School, and Brian Hunt as Director of Safety and Security. Our new Immersive Dyslexia Program also brings three wonderful educators to the Walker community.

    We are also pleased to share that Christopher Lee has been promoted to District Manager with SAGE, our food services company. While this means that Christopher will no longer be in charge of daily operations for us, Walker is in his district so he will remain a presence on our campus.
In addition to welcoming our new faculty and staff, we congratulate those who have retired: Lynn Benfield, Sam Hussey, Kate McConnaughey, Candy Norris, Bob Petersen, Bruce Powell, and Jan Steffen.

And we extend best wishes to those who are exploring new opportunities: Jason Bacigalupo, Caroline Brashier, Casey Fiman, Rob Look, Malanda Murchison, Kayleen Whitmer, and Tara Williams Owens.

The Walker School is a private, co-ed day school offering opportunities in academics, arts, and athletics for preschool, elementary, middle, and high school students in Metro Atlanta.
