Immersive Dyslexia Program

The Walker School New Avenues Dyslexia Program's program and personnel have expanded such that we will offer grades 1-5 for the 2019-20 school year. We serve children with dyslexia who have above average academic aptitude and a strong desire to fulfill their abundant potential. The program was developed by renowned consultant Gena Farinholt and experienced speech/language pathologist Sue Rittenberg.

With dedicated support at home and at school, students in New Avenues will work and learn within Walker’s college-preparatory environment. It is our hope that remediated students will be able to transition into the existing school community.

Our experienced, Orton-Gillingham certified teachers address each student’s struggles and build upon each child’s strengths as they work in our dedicated classroom spaces. This targeted instruction allows students to close the gap between their cognitive potential and their academic achievement.

  • How to Apply

We encourage all prospective families to schedule a visit to our campus. We offer personal tours of our Immersive Dyslexia Program every day that school is in session. Please call our Admission Office 678-581-6923 or email katherine.harrison@thewalkerschool.org or joanne.walsh@thewalkerschool.org to schedule a tour at a time that is convenient for you.
    • To begin the application process, click on the ‘Apply Now’ link under the admission process tab. Please provide the requested information and submit the $85 non-refundable application fee. At this point you will be prompted to complete a JATP authorization form. Although you will complete this step to continue in Ravenna, the JATP exam is not needed.
    • Please sign the transcript release form found in your online Ravenna account and give it to your current school so that they are authorized to send us your child’s transcript.
    • Please contact our Admission Office for the Immersive Dyslexia Program Parent Statement form and Teacher Evaluation form.
    • Please use the Teacher Evaluation form you receive from the Admission Office in lieu of the form provided in the online Ravenna account.
    • Please provide Walker’s Admission Office with a copy of your child’s current (within the last three years) psychoeducational evaluation report. This report should include the WISC-V or the WIPPSI for rising first graders.
    • Once Walker has received your child’s application, transcript, Parent Statement form, Teacher Evaluation form, and psychoeducational evaluation report, we will contact you to schedule a screening for your child.
    • You will receive feedback from Walker’s admission committee shortly after your child’s visit. Per AAAIS admission protocol, Walker may use a rolling notification for the Immersive Dyslexia Program.
  • About Gena & Sue

Our Immersive Dyslexia Program was developed by Gena Farinholt, who brings more than 30 years of experience in dyslexia education. Gena served in numerous roles at The Schenck School, ranging from classroom teacher to principal, before serving as Head of School from 2000-2015. Since retiring from Schenck, she has served as a consultant to dyslexia schools and programs in Richmond, Virginia and Memphis, Tennessee. Gena is nationally known for her expertise, and we are thankful for her guidance during our program’s inception as well as her continued support through consultation and collaboration with our Director, Cindy O’Neill.

Sue Rittenberg is a speech/language pathologist who began her career more than 32 years ago. She had a private practice in Marietta for several years, working primarily with children diagnosed with auditory/language processing deficits. Sue became passionate about working with dyslexic students during her 10 years as Walker’s Primary and Lower School Learning Specialist. Sue works alongside Cindy O’Neill to assess prospective students for our Immersive Dyslexia Program.
