The Walker School Immersive Dyslexia Program will welcome students for the 2018-19 school year. We will serve children in grades 2-4 with dyslexia who have above average academic aptitude and a strong desire to fulfill their abundant potential. The program is being developed by renowned consultant Gena Farinholt and experienced speech/language pathologist Sue Rittenberg.
With dedicated support at home and at school, students in the dyslexia program will work and learn within The Walker School's college-preparatory environment, and as the program develops, it is our hope that remediated students will be able to transition into the existing school community. In year one, we expect to serve 12-18 students in classes of approximately six students.
Dedicated classroom spaces and Orton-Gillingham certified teachers will focus on each student's unique gifts to close the gap between cognitive potential and academic achievement.
We encourage all prospective families to schedule a visit to our campus. While we do not have scheduled group tours or Open Houses for our Immersive Dyslexia Program, we offer personal tours every day that school is in session, and we invite you to call our Admission Office to schedule a tour at a time convenient for you.

(You will be prompted to complete a JATP authorization form as part of the application submission; however, applicants to Walker’s Immersive Dyslexia Program do not need to have a JATP exam).

Please use the Teacher Evaluation form you receive from the Admission Office in lieu of the form provided in the online Ravenna account.
Please provide Walker’s Admission Office with a copy of your child’s current (within the last three years) psychoeducational evaluation report.
Once Walker has received your child’s application, transcript, Parent Statement form, Teacher Evaluation form, and psychoeducational evaluation report, we will contact you to schedule an assessment visit for your child.
You will receive feedback from Walker’s admission committee shortly after your child’s assessment visit. Per AAAIS Admission Procedures for the 2018-19 school year, Walker may use a rolling notification process for the Immersive Dyslexia Program.
Our Immersive Dyslexia Program was developed by Gena Farinholt, who brings more than 30 years of experience in dyslexia education. Gena served in numerous roles at The Schenck School, ranging from classroom teacher to principal, before serving as Head of School from 2000-2015. Since retiring from Schenck, she has served as a consultant to dyslexia schools and programs in Richmond, Virginia and Memphis, Tennessee. Gena is nationally known for her expertise, and we are thankful for her guidance during our program’s inception as well as her continued support through consultation and collaboration with our Director, Cindy O’Neill.
Sue Rittenberg is a speech/language pathologist who began her career more than 32 years ago. She had a private practice in Marietta for several years, working primarily with children diagnosed with auditory/language processing deficits. Sue became passionate about working with dyslexic students during her 10 years as Walker’s Primary and Lower School Learning Specialist. Sue works alongside Cindy O’Neill to assess prospective students for our Immersive Dyslexia Program.
