Coronavirus Resources

Parent Support

Social distancing and our “new normal” can provide many challenges to parents. This page is here to help provide a sense of community and support during this period of social distancing. Please check back often for resources to entertain and engage your family, take care of your mental health and learn from others. You are not alone.
First, Take Care of Yourself
"On an airplane, an oxygen mask descends in front of you. What do you do? As we all know, the first rule is to put on your own oxygen mask before you assist anyone else. Only when we first help ourselves can we effectively help others. Caring for yourself is one of the most important—and one of the most often forgotten—things you can do as a caregiver. When your needs are taken care of, the person you care for will benefit, too." - Family Caregiver Alliance

Here are five tips to practice self-care as a parent.

1. Practice Gratitude: When you’re feeling overwhelmed, try to think about the good things in your life. Write down one thing you're grateful for every day. Download the Grateful app to use as a digital gratitude journal.

2. Take a minute to breathe:
Mindfulness Moments aren't just for students. Calm your mind and take a moment to breathe today.

3. Be Realistic:  “Perfectionism and the coronavirus don’t mix,” says David Anderson, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the Child Mind Institute. “It’s time to be exceedingly realistic, both at work and as a parent.” Avoid burnout by setting realistic expectations and giving yourself grace if you can’t meet them. “Practice forgiveness and self-compassion,” says Dr. Anderson.

4. Set Boundaries:  Utilize the "do not disturb" feature on your phone, set virutal office hours and take 30 minutes to yourself.

5. Keep it simple: Give yourself permission to keep meals, activities and entertainment simple. Your kids will remember the time they spent with you.
