  • Reduce Idling Campaign

Please support The Walker School’s "Reduce Idling Zones" and turn your car off while waiting to pick up your children. The Reduce Idling Carpool Zones are part of The Walker School’s Clean Air School program, in partnership with The Clean Air Campaign. We are asking parents to adopt a reduce-idling policy for their vehicles. When our children come out to carpool, their young lungs are breathing in the pollutants produced from idling.

  • Better World Books

The Walker School is now a drop off site for Better World Books, an organization that collects, sells, donates, and/or recycles books. They will accept gently used books of any type, including textbooks. They will be donating money to The Walker School for the books collected. Their collection bin is located in the parking lot of the upper level tennis courts.

  • More Items We Accept for Recycling

More and more our society is disposing of outdated consumer electronics in search of the latest technological advances. These electronics contains many toxic substances that will leach into our environment if not disposed of properly. However, they also contain more than 17 scarce and other non-ferrous metals - all of which are recoverable and more importantly reusable. In addition to cell phones, The Walker School can now handle the proper disposal of the following consumer electronics. To add to the good news, Walker receives monetary rebates for the electronics collected. Please drop these off in the same collection bins as for cell phones, located outside each division office.

    Laptop and Notebook Computers
    iPads and Tablets
    Apple iPods and MP3 Players
    Digital Cameras
    Digital Video Cameras
    GPS Devices
    Radar Detectors
    Kindle and Sony Book Readers
    Handheld Game Systems
Game Consoles (Wii, PS3, Xbox) and Video Games

  • Environmental Clubs

The Green Wolverines, the lower school club, have been busy producing plays that teach the faculty and students about various environmental topics. As a donation to the Walker Auction, they created five mirrors decorated with recycled materials. In April, they will be touring an electronics recycling facility.

In the Middle School, their club is collecting aluminum cans for the Great American Roundup. In the hallways they have posted signs with environmental tips for everyday living. They are participating in the Green Day challenge and are heavily involved in the composting campaign.

High school juniors, Mohini Chakravorty, Samah Hisamuddin, Isabelle Haslam, and Han Song are leading this effort. They have visited other schools to view their programs and have developed a plan for the Walker campus. They have arranged to have compost bins built and will be implementing the program this spring. Please help us to make a better world for our children by reducing, reusing, or recycling.  Recycling not only cuts down on materials and toxic substances being buried in landfills, but also lowers the need to commit more natural resources to product manufacturing.
