Academic achievement in the Preschool
Walker Preschool offers a structured, child-centered, strong academic program. Each self-contained class studies language arts (including a strong phonics emphasis), reading, handwriting, math, science, social studies, and character education. Special area teachers also provide science, art, computer, music, physical education, library, and Spanish for Pre-Kindergarteners.
Classes are five days a week beginning at 8:00 and dismissing at 2:30 (with the exception of one prekindergarten class that meets from 8:00 until noon).
- The Language Arts program provides activities that stimulate all aspects of a child’s development. Special emphasis is placed on phonics and phonemic awareness. Writing also plays an important role in Preschool from prewriting skills to creative writing.
- Mathematics is based on practical daily application with a “hands-on” approach. The ability to understand concepts and organize mathematical information is an important focus in the Preschool.
- Social Studies in the Preschool curriculum enables each child to develop an awareness of self and the environment, as well as the diversity of cultures.
- Preschool Science is an inquiry-based, child-centered curriculum. Experiences appropriate to the student’s developmental level are used as a way of investigating. The children use units designed to gain awareness of the scientific methods of observing, comparing, organizing, and applying learned principles.
