Fun & Games Camp

This camp has become a favorite of many Walker students. We play games ranging

from sardines, to ghost in the graveyard, to capture the flag. Older campers also get

the opportunity to play team sports such as hockey, soccer, dodge ball, football, pillo

polo, and kickball. Younger campers enjoy games that involve lots of movement such

as tag, survival, and turkey hunt.

 “You Too Can Publish!”

Who:         Middle and High School Students

June 2nd – 5th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

June 2nd – 5th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Cost:          $200.00 (includes software, book binding, shipping and handling)

Each Session is Limited to 20 students.

Published author Melissa Tulloch teaches students how to develop a text into a published

work of art. Mrs. Tulloch will begin by teaching students how she self published her own

story and then she will work with students to develop and publish their own book. Students

receive published book approximately two-three weeks after the workshop.

This workshop sharpens student’s ability to write and edit a book- which involves necessary

skills in all aspects of writing. Students are free to publish:  narratives, biographies, graphic

novels, autobiographies, self illustrated picture books, photo collages, photo albums, cookbooks,

guest books, yearbooks, journals, poetry books, blog to book, portfolios, children’s books, or

any other idea that is approved by Mrs. Tulloch. Students gain confidence and excitement

about their writing and learn to edit their work in a new format. Once students work with Mrs.

Tulloch they will be able to make a book anytime they want to- on their own!

Walker Wolverine Fast Pitch Softball Camp

 

                                  

When: June 9-12

          5:00-7:00 p.m.

Where: Walker Softball Field

Cost: $100

Who: Rising 4th - 8th grade girls

 Coordinated by Walker’s Varsity Fast Pitch Softball Coaches Susan Bargo,

Anna Hairston, Mike Mackey, and Varsity Players

Participants will focus on fundamental skills including: Hitting, Fielding, Base

running, Pitching,

Catching, Defensive and Offensive strategies.

form with a check for $100, payable to The Walker School.  The balance of your camp

fee will be due on June 12th.  Wear comfortable clothes and bring your bat and glove

and your water bottle.

and energized science fair camp this summer.

to define the science project idea, understand the science required and produce a

detailed research plan.

Wolverine Football Skills Camp

When: June 23 - 26
          9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Cost: $100

Who: LS/MS boys (Grades 3-8)

        (both Walker and non-Walker students are welcome)

This camp is non-contact!

Coordinated by the Walker Football staff, including MS Head Coach Ira Dawson

and Varsity Head Coach Ben Williamson.

Fundamental skill development will be emphasized, including: blocking technique,

passing, catching, stances, running with the football, route-running, pursuit angles,

ball drills and more. Camp participants will conclude each day with a game and

character development session. Campers will be responsible for their own lunch.

Camper safety and hydration will be top priority!

The Camp

The Walker Art Camp is designed to teach children skills in the areas of painting,

drawing, sculpting, and mixed media. Each camper will be challenged to better

define their unique interests and hone their creative abilities through art. Each

camp session will have a different theme, and the projects will vary in skill

level and discipline throughout the week. Our focus will be on developing each

campers artistic skills and helping them to recognize and appreciate Art as an

important medium of self expression.

More importantly, our goal is to have fun!!!

The Teacher

Lisa Crowley is the Pre-School Art and Science teacher. She is a 1999 graduate

of Berry College in Rome, Ga.While at Berry, Lisa majored in Studio Art and

Animal Science. As an art student, Lisa studied under Dr.Tommy Mew and Professor

Jere Lykins, both of whom are world renowned artists in the areas of painting and

ceramics.

Since graduating, Lisa has been involved in the Westminster School’s Summer Program

where she was an instructor in their science and art camps. She will be assisted by

teachers, volunteers, and students with experience in the field of Art.

Reading and Writing Summer Camp


For Rising Kindergarten and First Grade Students

Computer Camp

A minimum of 5 people are required for each session

Students that are in the band don't get a chance to take the 8th grade HTML class

due to scheduling conflicts.  This camp will allow these students to learn how to create

webpages and Blogs with the use of HTML, Javascript, and Fireworks (a graphics editing

program).  This class will teach students to create a webpage through raw coding and

post the webpages online if they choose.  This promises to be a fun and rewarding

educational experience for anyone that enjoys technology.

This workshop will help develop many vital skills which will help your student

make the best of their Middle School years (and beyond!). We will focus on

such key areas as:

  • Learning Styles/Modalities - determining how your student’s brain is wired,”

and tailoring his or her efforts to use those strengths to maximize learning!

  • Time Management Skills - getting the most out of studying and minimizing

wasted time!

  • Organizational Skills - keeping track of assignments, materials, and due dates;

organizing notebooks, lockers, and study areas; scheduling and prioritizing.

  • Note-taking Skills - active listening, types of notes, outlining, webs, idea trees,

developing a personal shorthand, filtering information, and other strategies.

avoiding test anxiety, pacing during tests, strategies for different types of tests,

  • intelligent guessing, and yes, even how to cram effectively!
  • Problem Solving and Other Thinking Skills - problem analysis, brainstorming,
  • creating alternatives, goal-setting, and more.
  • Interpersonal Skills - working effectively as part of a team/group, peer relationships,
  • developing and maintaining positive relationships with teachers and parents (very

important!), and communicating ideas clearly.

The Walker Soccer Camp

When:   Junior Camp (PK-2nd)

We will meet in the main soccer field in the stadium. Campers should have an abundance

of sunscreen along with a water bottle. Shinpads and soccer cleats are also encouraged.

Rugball / Social Dancing Camps

Interactive camps for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders

Social Dancing (July 7 – 11, 2008 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

  • Learn to both lead and follow a variety of partner dances
    Dances will be chosen based on the interests of the participants and may
  • include Argentine Tango, Swing, Disco, Waltz, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Polka
  • Dancers learn rhythm, balance and connection with the partner
  • No memorized dance routines unique to people who took the class
  • No experience or partner necessary
  • Maximum 16 students, minimum 8

Coed Rugball (July 21 – 25, 2008 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

  • A combination of football and rugby (rules on reverse of this page)
  • Fast-moving game for an incredible aerobic workout.
  • Accommodations for water breaks and shade will be provided
  • Lessons on proper tackling techniques will be included
  • Each participant may choose whether to play full tackle or two-hand touch
  • Participants are strongly encouraged to bring cleats
  • Maximum 16 students, minimum 8

the Walker School. Return form to Mr. Surkan or his mailbox by May 29th .
Students enrolled in morning language camps AND afternoon camps with Mr. Surkan

may bring a bag lunch and stay at school with Mr. Surkan between camps. They also

receive a $15 discount on the language camps.

Learn Spanish/German through Actions

A Language Immersion Camp for rising 7th, 8th and 9th graders

Join Mr. Surkan to:

  • Learn language interactively by physically interacting in the language
  • Learn grammar and vocabulary contextually
  • Receive vocabulary sheets to learn the spelling of the words used in class
  • Prepare a daily snack interactively in the target language
  • Play games both in the classroom and beyond in the target language
  • Jumpstart a move into a new foreign language or reinforce an existing one

Cost:            $80.00

Camp will focus on skill development in a fun environment.  Most of the camp

will be designed to enhance individual ability.  Campers will be able to showcase

their talents in game situations. Cost includes t-shirt.

Practice, Polish, & Perfect : Customize Your College Quest!

If you are looking for even more one on one help, as your begin your journey through

the college maze, then this course is for you!

 

THE COURSE

Trying to navigate your way through the college maze?   This course is designed to help

you sort through your personal needs as you begin to look for a college that is your

“best fit.”  You will walk away from this course with:

  • The skills needed to speak and present yourself during a college interview, tour,

or scholarship interview. (grooming, body language, questions to ask, etc.)

  • Practice using those new skills at a college visit on Friday of the course.
  • Design and Complete your personal college resume
  • A personal script for all correspondence between you and colleges, as well as

knowledge of when to send correspondences.

  • The ability to navigate and use college websites effectively.
  • The ability to use the counseling office’s on-line resources.
  • A completed personal checklist for the colleges you are looking for.

Minimum enrollment for the course is 10 students with a maximum of 28.  The

course is Monday through Friday and held in a classroom in the Upper School

(location t.b.a.).   Because this is a comprehensive course, students must attend

all five days of the course.  The course is not limited to Walker students.  For

THE TEACHERS

Mr. Peter Sullivan is the Assistant Dean of College Guidance at The Walker School.

For the past five years, Peter has traveled all over the United States visiting over

130 colleges and universities.  He helps high school students with their college visits,

college applications, scholarship applications, and matching students with

volunteer/community service opportunities in our surrounding community. Mr.

Sullivan holds a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Furman University

and is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counselors

(NACAC).

Mrs. Katie Arjona is the Fine Arts Department Chair in the Upper School and has

been teaching public speaking for 5 years.   She is an interview consultant for high

school students during the college admission and scholarship process.  She has her

B.A. in Theatre and Political Science and an M.F.A. in Theatre from the University of

North Carolina Greensboro.

CLASS REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Withdrawal from class prior to the first day will result in a $20.00 processing fee.

Cancellation of a class due to insufficient enrollment will be made a minimum of 48

hours prior to the first meeting and students will be notified. The teachers reserve

the right to alter or cancel scheduled classes as necessary. If a class is cancelled, a

full refund will be issued.
