From the Headmaster

As we approach the start of the 2008-2009 school year, I look forward to seeing our students back on campus eager to learn. We have been busy preparing for our students' return over the summer and will be ready to greet each and every one of them on August 13. You may learn more about registration on August 11 and 12 by reviewing our online registration information.

Registration information

Registration will be held on Monday, August 11 for students in grades 6-12 and on Tuesday, August 12 for students in grades PK-5. Check out our registration information online today!

Thank you Walker community! You did it.

In February 2007, a local foundation awarded Walker a $350,000 challenge grant to support the improvements to the 3.5 acres of land the school purchased on Damar Road. In order to claim the full amount, Walker needed to reach a $625,000 Annual Fund goal during the 2007-2008 school year. We are proud to report that you rose to the challenge! Together, our Walker parents, grandparents, faculty/staff, parents of alumni, and alumni contributed just over $595,000 toward the goal. A $276,000 gift-in-kind from SRS, Inc. brought the total amount raised this year to $871,723, greatly exceeding our goal and securing this important grant for our school.

The Annual Report, which will be published in the fall edition of the Walker magazine, will provide greater detail on the plans for the Damar land now that the financial needs for this project have been fully met. The Walker School deeply appreciates the generosity and support of its donors. This would not have been possible without each and every one of you!

Save the date now for Walker's homecoming on September 26. For more information on the event, please contact Kaleb McMichen, Director of Alumni Relations.

Kristy Helms named Director of Communications

Kristy Helms has been promoted to the newly created position of Director of Communications. She has served Walker as a Development Associate for the past two years and is excited to lead Walker's communications efforts going forward. The position was created as the school strives to deliver the most effective communications to all members of the Walker community. Her position will involve establishing an overall communications strategy, overseeing all publications, website design management, distributing press releases to the media, and managing the school's advertising initiatives. Kristy is available to help all departments and Walker organizations with their communications efforts. Her office is located in the Development Office. Please contact Kristy if needed at helmsk@thewalkerschool.org or stop by her office.

Walker's recycling program a huge success!

Over the past six months Walker has recycled more than 15,000 pounds of mixed recyclables. Our Electronics Recycling Day in April collected almost 8,600 pounds of consumer electronic products. A few Walker students who helped on this day are seen to the right. Walker's cell phone and ink jet cartridge recycling program has resulted in over $680 cash back for our environmental programs. That also means close to 400 cell phones, almost 900 ink jet cartridges, and their toxins have been diverted from our landfills. On Earth Day 2008, the faculty, staff and students participated in an event that raised over $900. (read more)

Book endowment

The Preschool and Lower School libraries will hold book endowment during registration. This is an opportunity for parents to donate a book to the Preschool library or the Winship Library in their child's name. A book plate with the donor's name and the child's name goes into the book and then the student becomes the first person to check the book out! Please stop by and participate.

New organization: Patrons of the Arts

The Walker School is proud to introduce a new organization at Walker. This organization, Patrons of the Arts, or POTA, is a group of dedicated individuals who recognize the vital role that the arts play in the comprehensive development of all Walker students. Our goal is to support all facets of Walker's Middle and Upper School fine arts department through encouragement, publicity and improvement of facilities, equipment, and program offerings. Booster Club

The Walker Booster Club would like to remind everyone to continue to use your Publix Partners and Kroger Plus cards when shopping for groceries. The school receives between $10,000 and $15,000 annually through these combined programs. If you do not have a Publix card, please stop by any of the school's offices and pick one up. The Kroger program is linked to your Kroger Plus card and must be updated every year after Aug. 1. Click here to access the Walker barcode, take it to your local Kroger and the cashier will scan it and your Kroger Plus card to link them.

Stop by the Booster Club table at registration to purchase parking spaces and reserved seating for home football games. We will also have information about volunteer opportunities and will answer any of your Booster Club related questions.

WSA

The WSA has a new board and a great lineup of activities this year! The first event you will attend supported by the Walker School Association is registration on August 11 and 12. At registration you will be exposed to groups looking for volunteers, activities to get involved in and information about different school groups.
