Hurricane Relief Effort

SGA’s “Have a Heart” Campaign

September 2 --- September 9

As the reality and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina settles, many are left wondering what to do in order to reach out to our friends on the coast. After contacting those organizations whose job it is to respond during times of crisis, The Walker School Student Government Association is coordinating a school-wide fundraising initiative to help the victims from this historic and tragic disaster.

Beginning at Walker’s football game on September 2 and running until Friday, September 9, The Upper School SGA is sponsoring a campaign entitled “Have a Heart” to assist those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Each paper heart that is purchased will be displayed in the dining hall of the Preschool, Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School.

Hearts can be purchased anytime in the Upper School Office, during carpool, in your child’s homeroom, and during the first half of the Walker/Cross Keys football game on September 2, 2005. Cash or checks accepted. Please make checks payable to The Walker School and write “Have a Heart” on the memo line.

$1-$9                              White Heart

$10-$49                           Maroon Heart

$50 and above                  Gold Heart

All questions should be emailed to sga@thewalkerschool.org

Additionally, all ticket sales from the Walker/Cross Keys football game will be donated to the hurricane relief effort.

Please continue to check the Walker website for further updates on ways that you can help and check up on our progress.

“Project Backpack”

September 12 --- September 16

In an effort to aid the thousands of children displaced by Hurricane Katrina, The Walker School has joined in Project Backpack- a grassroots effort aimed at supplying much needed school supplies for these children as they begin returning to school.  We are inviting each of our students to purchase and fill one backpack (or as many as you would like to contribute) with the suggested supplies listed below.

Deadline: Walker will begin accepting backpacks on Monday, September 12 at the drop-off locations below.  All filled backpacks must be delivered to The Walker School no later than 12:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16.

Drop off Locations:

Pre-School Students: Front Desk with Sherri Anderson

Lower School Students: Gatti Hall Stage

Middle and Upper School Students: Auditorium Stage

*An SGA representative will be available to collect multiple backpack deliveries during morning carpool Monday through Friday

Special Considerations:

  • Each student participating should pack a backpack that is specific to his/her own age and grade (i.e. a 5th grader would pack a Lower School appropriate bag while a 12th grader would pack an Upper School appropriate bag, etc.).
  • We encourage students to include special notes, cards, messages of hope, etc. in the packs (younger students may want to draw a picture).
  • Please keep in mind that, due to the logistics involved for distribution, we ask that items in the backpack be kept gender neutral (please see back of flyer for more details).
  • Make sure a list of all items in the backpack is included in the pack’s front zipper pocket.
  • Finally, with masking tape and a marker, label the outside of the backpack to indicate the appropriate grade level (i.e. “5th Grade” or “12th Grade”).

Questions: Please call Sharon Hurst at 678-581-6915 or feel free to email her at hursts@thewalkerschool.org.  You can also call Cathy LaClaire at 678-581-6904 or email her at laclaire@thewalkerschool.org.
