SUCCESS FOR WALKER FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENTS
Students from the Walker School’s foreign language department have received statewide and national recognition for outstanding performance in the national language examinations.
Of 135,000 Latin students who took the National Latin Exam, fifty two Walker Latin students won awards. Gold medals and Summa Cum laude certificates were presented to Sydney Haltom, Tony Wilder, Alison Lane, Erik Houston, Zacary Zarnik, Hannah Hensley, Drew West, Chris Locandro, Audrey Worley, Drew Onken, Taylor Spear, Jarrod Hall, Abby Halpern, David Kelly, Andreas Wilder, Mikey Murphy, John Carr, Sarah O’Donahue, Elizabeth McConnaughey, and Carrie Stallings. Three students, Sydney Haltom, Audrey Worley and Sarah O’Donahue earned perfect scores. Carrie Stallings received The Maureen O’Donnell Classical Dictionary for earning gold medals for four consecutive years. Sarah O’Donahue, a Latin 1V student who will be attending The Governor’s Honors Program in Latin this summer, received both the Maureen O’Donnell Classical Dictionary and the Carter Drake Goad Book Award. Sarah was one of only nine students of the 135,000 who participated, to achieve a perfect score for four consecutive years.
The following students were Honored at a reception hosted by The American Association of teachers of German, for outstanding performance on The National German Exam: Beyza Kilic, (7thplace), Tori Price, Katie Davydova, Lauren Ohmstede, Ryan Price (2nd at Level 3), Eryn Killian(4th) Jordan Croom (7th), Evan Barre, Katie Klein, Christine Mader, Andrew Lynn (4th at level 4), Chip Burge and Nick Wellmon. Two of these students, Jordan Croom and Eryn Killian have been selected to attend the Ga. Governor’s Honors Program in German this summer.
Sean Skelton has received the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) Outstanding High School Senior in German Award. As a recipient of the award he was presented with a special certificate acknowledging his achievement and his name will be placed on the AATG Outstanding Senior Honor Roll on the AATG web site.
Sean was nominated for this award by his German teacher, Mrs Janet Ward, who taught Sean from 8th grade through Advanced Placement German, in which Sean received a grade 5, the highest possible grade, in his junior year. Sean has consistently demonstrated exceptional commitment to the study of German by participating in The National German Exam, The Georgia State Convention, The German Honor Society and The Walker School German Club. Sean spent the first semester of his senior year in Salzburg, Austria where he attended High School. Sean lists this experience as the most enriching experience of his life. Not only did he perfect his knowledge of the German language, but he experienced another culture and made many fast friendships. Sean plans to attend the University of Miami where he hopes to major in German and International Business.
Two students from The Walker School placed nationally in The National French Exam. Erin Collins placed fifth in level 3 and Jessi Crabbe placed sixth nationally. Several more French students placed in the top 20 in the State. Level 2, Molly Borger, Kate Leisy, Pallavi Saraf, Brandi Ward. At level 3: Chalon Couturier, Brendan Keegan, Henry Luessen, Tina Materesse, Abbey Warren, Alexandra Whitcomb. Level 5: Courtney Allen. Kate Borger, Emmie Boyer, Ellyce Jones, Rebecca Herrigel. Allyanna Johnson, Beyza Kilic, Kerem Kilic and Michael Kleinman.
Walker Had two national winners for The National Spanish Exam. In sixth place, Kapil Bhatia and in first place, Sarah O’Donahue. Bryan West placed 9th in Georgia.
With these excellent results and active exchange programs to France and Germany, The Walker School is certainly the place to be for the study of foreign languages!
