Middle School Arts Festival
This year's Middle School Art Fest took place on April 26th and was the culmination of our year-long focus on Slavic art. The centerpiece of the festival was a life-size chess game in which students donned headpieces artfully designed by sixth grade parent Judy Shurling-Smith and became the chess pieces. The game was run by members of the Middle School Chess Club from two towers that looked down on the huge chess board designed and built by Bill Schreiner, Walker parent and part-time staff member. Our own Dennis McElhaney taught Juggling. Walker parent Natasha Sosnovsky hosted a "Russian Culture Corner" where she displayed various examples of folk art and taught students a few Russian phrases. Students colored in Russian Icon designs, decorated photo mats in the style of carved Russian cottage window frames, made Czechoslovakian glass bead bracelets, painted folk art designs on ceramic tiles, decorated eggs Ukrainian-style, had their faces painted, and tried on costume pieces. After the festival we enjoyed delicious Slavic regional delicacies in the Walker Dining Hall courtesy of our creative SAGE staff! A good time was had by all, and it wouldn't have been possible without the hard work, from start to finish, of all the parent volunteers. Many thanks to you all!
