Volunteer Opportunities in the Middle School
Parent Volunteers are welcomed and actively encouraged to choose activities through which they can participate in school programs. The Walker School Association and the Athletic Booster Club are the two main organizations through which parents support the school, but there are numerous additional opportunities to share professional expertise, travel experiences, hobbies, and interests throughout the year by speaking to classes, clubs, or interest groups. Math Professional Day, for example, is an occasion when parents in diverse professions demonstrate for students math applications required for their particular jobs.
We offer a number of opportunities for students to be involved in community service projects throughout the year, and parental help with these projects is always welcome. Parents are needed to help with art shows and activities, drama productions, and occasionally with field trips. To promote healthy socialization skills, the Middle School Social Committee helps launch each new school year by organizing our annual Middle School Retreat at Laurel Park in August, followed by several other social events. The success of these events is largely dependent on a high degree of parent participation.
Even while students are actively trying to gain more independence, they need to know that you are active partners with their teachers and coaches. Be selective. Your child doesn’t need (or want!) to see you at every event, or chaperoning every party, but we hope you will choose to be here participating in the ways you feel most comfortable.
Sign up sheets are available on Registration Day. Volunteer opportunities are also discussed on Parents’ Night.
Each spring, we ask for volunteers to be Middle School Advisory Team Parents for the following school year. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please contact Blair Fisher.
