Pegasus
Walker's Nationally Recognized Art and Literary Magazine |

About the Magazine:
Our students embrace writing and the arts both in and out of the classroom. For over 20 years, Pegasus has given Walker students a forum in which they can publish and share memoir, poetry, fiction, essays, photographs, sculpture, and drawings.
Why Pegasus? In Greek Mythology, the winged horse Pegasus, son of Poseidon and Medusa, strikes the ground on Mount Halicon with his hoof, and in this spot springs water blessed to the muses and poets alike. In this tradition, we offer our Pegasus as a source of inspiration. We hope that our work, like that mythological horse, finds a home as enduring as the night sky. Our literary publication, wholly student-run and generated, serves Walker’s entire student body from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade. This age range of contributors makes Pegasus decidedly unique.
2008-2009 Theme:
In the fall of 2008, nationally-acclaimed poet and professor Jeffrey Harrison visited Walker for a day. His reading and classroom visits so inspired our Upper School student body that we chose the namesake title poem of one of Harrison books as our 2008-2009 theme: “The Names of Things.” Harrison kindly agreed to our humble request to let us use the title of one his books as the guiding theme for Pegasus. For a link to the full poem and his bio, click here.
"The Names of Things" captures both the beauty and the power of language but allows us to acknowledge that even words, sometimes, fall short, as the best writers in history often conclude. "The Names of Things" is about how we make meaning of our lives in the world and our personal and collective histories, how we name things with art and with music, and how our words help us to love and understand the world around us—the one we inhabit and improve each day at The Walker School.
Guidelines for Submission:
Send us your work until March 27, 2009! All students are encouraged to submit artwork and writing to Pegasus. Teachers may also submit work on a student’s behalf.
