Arts Month Schedule
"To look through the eyes of a four-year-old into a land of dragons and castles. To watch a Middle Schooler enunciate Elizabethan English to a hushed audience. To step into the inner sanctum of an Upper School junior through a sonata in A major. The arts are thriving at Walker, and so are our students."

e believe in a comprehensive art program for all ages. We recognize and appreciate the talents of our students and strive to enrich their school experiences with a variety of offerings in the arts and humanities.
Ours is an artistic journey that begins at age four and never stops. It's art classes offered every year, in every imaginable media and technique. It's our Lower School Spring Play where each year 300 students perform in a musical-drama revue. It's instrumental instruction beginning in Middle School. It's winds, strings, percussion and choral ensembles. It’s one dramatic production after another - beautifully acted, professionally produced - starting at grade six.
And when it is not being created on canvas or a stage, it’s something else, perhaps an essay for our critically acclaimed literary magazine or one of our multi-talented talent shows. What new creation lies within you? Come to Walker and discover it.
Art
Art…Our strong emphasis on the visual arts can be seen in the quality of our student art work. Art classes are offered for students in pre-kindergarten through Upper School where they are exposed to a variety of media and techniques.
Preschool students study art from a variety of time periods and countries. They cover skills related to elements and principles of design and learn how to apply these skills to works of art. Focus is given to important styles, techniques, and the artists who defined each period. The annual Preschool Art Show highlights the work of our Preschool artists. Sample Preschool art.
Lower School art focuses on media and techniques with an emphasis on clay work. Students enjoy projects in drawing, painting, cut and torn paper techniques, clay work, textile and fabric assignments, and sculpture. Art history plays a part in many assignments through art prints, handouts, and resource books. Students gain an appreciation for the work of others as well as their own through our ever-changing art work displays. Their imaginations are challenged by seeing the work of professional artists in our main gallery. Sample Lower School art.
Each year Middle School students are exposed to the art of a specific culture. While students have the opportunity to draw, paint, and sculpt each year, art of the chosen culture provides inspiration for both content and technique for various art projects throughout the year. The Middle School participates in a hands-on art festival including music, food, games and crafts of the country they have studied. The Gallery showcases the art work of Middle School students each summer. Sample Middle School art.
Upper School art offers courses in drawing, painting, collage, clay, sculpture and AP Studio Art. For the past three years our average for AP Studio Art portfolio scores, as a whole, totals 3.75. A phenomenal number for such a rigorous course! Several of our students have also been recognized nationally. Upper School art students spend months preparing for their annual show in The Gallery and assist with large murals used in Arts Month events. Upper School art students are also responsible for the design and installation of the mural adorning the entrance to the Walker Preschool. Sample Upper School art.
The Gallery
Established in 1985, The Gallery at The Walker School showcases work by professional artists in the Atlanta area as well as exhibiting creative student art work. Exhibiting artists have included Lucy Browning, Don Dougan, Coe Steinwart, Ann Regdon, Karen Beswick and Zhen-Huan Lu.
Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional student work is always on display throughout the school. We take pride in the originality and creativity of our students and plan continually changing exhibits for our Walker community. We thank our parent volunteers who help with mounting and hanging the many projects each year.
