In the Lower School, the year culminates in an all-school production “The Spring Play” which includes singing, dancing, and acting. Every student is included in the annual play. Weekly school assemblies showcase the acting talents of each Lower School class.
In Middle School drama classes, typical Walker students tell stories, make speeches, act roles, write dialogue direct scenes, and compose songs for public performances by the end of seventh grade. The eighth grade drama classes put all these skills together to produce full-length class plays, build scenery and run lights and sound. After school, the WARTS “drama team” produces full-length plays, musicals, and comedy revues. Through theatre, our students gain self-confidence and the ability to perform in front of others with ease.
The Upper School Drama program offers acting classes in a four year sequence, as well as musical theatre and public speaking. The Company Players class is designed to give students who may be involved in athletics or extra-curricular activities the opportunity to be in a production.
Walker Drama, the Upper School’s extra-curricular theatre company, produced three productions a year, including a musical theatre revue called “The Broadway Spectacular”. This year’s productions include, “Radium Girls” and “Grease! The Musical”. This year the Drama program became a part of The International Thespian Society. This organization’s goal is to foster excellence in theatre education. Students are eligible for national scholarships in the arts and can compete in state and national acting competitions. Our Thespian troupe’s goal is to inspire the Walker community through theatre as well as produce all of the Upper School drama productions.
