The Walker School sets aside the month of February for a special celebration of the arts that are a part of the school’s life all year long.
During every week of every February, students in grades PK – 12 meet artists face-to-face. Professional musicians, actors, and dancers perform at special assemblies; older students give recitals for younger students; visiting artists lead workshops; classes take trips to art exhibits. Annually, performers from Lower and Upper School join the Middle School for a ceremony of lessons and songs to celebrate Black History Month.
The tradition of making February a month for "Pursuit of the Arts" was the inspiration of longtime arts teacher Sherry Walker-Taylor in the mid-1980s. Since 2005, Scott Smoot has been the director of Arts Month. His budget, supplemented by generous support from the Walker School Association (WSA), has allowed Mr. Smoot to bring artists from out of state, from New England and from Hollywood, to share their gifts with our students.
