Honor Societies

Honor Societies recognize academic excellence across a wide range of individual disciplines. While a specific grade average is required for initial consideration, each has a service component as an expectation for continued membership. As a small sample of their activities, several Honor Societies sponsor peer tutoring within that subject, the National Honor Society raises money throughout the year for Heifer International, the International Thespian Society produces a charity dinner theatre show, and the History and Social Sciences Honor Society organizes our yearly Veteran’s Day assembly. The goal of each organization is to develop within every member the understanding that responsibility to the organization and the School community does not start with a grade and end at induction.

The International Thespian Society

Eligibility criteria for admission:
Guidelines established by the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) are followed as well as additional guidelines based on the resources and needs of our school.

According to the ITS handbook:
"The International Thespian Society is the honor society for theatre arts students. Specifically, students earn the right to be inducted by accumulating points for their work and meeting other required criteria.

ITS provides a Thespian point system to help determine induction eligibility as well as Thespian point record sheets that make it easy to track each student’s earned points. Only the troupe director may award points. The troupe secretary or clerk/scribe is usually responsible for maintaining point records and making them available for each student’s personal review. Point records are kept at the troupe level. They are not sent to the home office.

All induction requirements must be in writing and provided to all students involved in the school’s theatre program.”

Induction criteria.   ITS point system summary:

1) 1 point represents approximately 10 hours of excellent work. We use this formula in awarding points for items not specifically listed in the constitution ( i.e construction time, inventory clean-up, etc.)
2) To become a Thespian, a student must earn 10 points, 5 of which should be acquired at the school where he or she is to be inducted.
3) Induction points are earned through participation in at least two full-length AFTER SCHOOL productions at Walker. Actors in Company Players productions and Broadway Spectacular are excluded because they are courses in the theatre curriculum and NOT an after school activity. Crew members in these productions
can earn points.
4) Induction points should be earned in at least two of the listed categories, for example, acting and production.
5) Induction points cannot be earned through participation in other art forms outside of school. This is a theatrical organization. However, the constitution does award points for pit orchestra in a musical.
6) Students may earn up to 5 points toward induction in the high school Thespian troupe through participation in community, children’s, or professional theatre.
7) Thespian membership is offered to all students who qualify. No student can be elected into the troupe, and no student can be denied membership if he or she has fulfilled all membership requirements.
